Augustine of Hippo (354-430), or also Saint Augustine, was a bishop in the Roman city of Hippo Regius, which is currently Annaba, Algeria. In addition to his pastoral work he was a prolific writer. His writings have been credited as the single most significant source of Christian thought in the Western church.

This work, known as the Enchiridion, is effectively a commentary on the Apostles' Creed and the Lord's Prayer. The Creed is taken as the basis of St. Augustine's discussion of faith (sects. 9-113), while the remarks on hope (sects. 114-116) serve as a brief exposition of the Lord's Prayer; the sections dealing with charity (sects. 117-121) are at once an appendage and the crown of the whole work. The Enchiridion occupies a place of high distinction among the author’s theological writings, since, while confining itself to the essentials of Christian teaching, it is his only systematic treatment of the Church’s doctrine as a whole, and, coming late in his career as bishop, shows that fullness of understanding and precision of analysis which his long years of pastoral care and active combat against heresies had produced in him.
